Overview

Competitions take classroom knowledge into a public arena: a fixed brief, a deadline, a demo and judges. IIEE’s record documents student participation and awards; the award record and photographs below are from the QEC evidence file.

Winning is useful. Finishing a working prototype, explaining it clearly and learning from the judges is the real return.

Why compete

Applied engineering

A brief forces you to choose, build and test under a real deadline.

Communication

You learn to explain a system to people who did not build it.

Network

Judges, mentors and other teams become future colleagues and collaborators.

How to take part

  1. Watch the notice board and department announcements for competitions.
  2. Form a small team with complementary skills.
  3. Ask a faculty member to mentor you.
  4. Register early and read the rules and judging criteria.
  5. Build, test and rehearse a short demonstration.
  6. Represent IIEE professionally, win or lose.

Have a competition in mind?

Tell your department early. A mentor and a little lead time make the difference between an idea and a working entry.

The record is from the published QEC evidence file. Current competitions are announced separately by the institute.
